Si Doel (Rano Karno) dibesarkan olah ibunya (Tuti Kirana) dan ayahnya (Benyamin S.) mengikuti budaya Betawi asli. Karena sebuah kecelakaan, ayahnya meninggal hingga ia hidup berdua dengan ibunya. Si Doel membantu ibunya berjualan untuk meneruskan hidup.
Pada suatu saat datang sebuah bantuan dari Asmad (Sjuman Djaya), pamannya yang kemudian diterima sebagai ayahnya. Asmad memberi kesempatan pada si Doel untuk bersekolah, juga sekaligus untuk menolak anggapan jelek anak Betawi karena banyak yang tidak bersekolah.
